One of the most prominent places of interest in Morocco, the Hercules Cave, Tangier is conveniently connected by buses, trains and ferry service till Tangier, from where it is just a 30 minutes taxi drive to the caves.
The Caves of Hercules in Tangier as its name suggests has a mythological history associated with it. People suppose that Hercules, a classical hero used to reside in these caves. He is said to have rested there the night before undertaking his 12 labors which granted him immortality. In fact it is also believed that it was Hercules who had established Tangier and with one blow of his sword had created the Straits of Gibraltar.
There are numerous pits in the Hercules Cave and passageways connecting them. The opening of the cave into the sea is also quite bizarre because it resembles the form of Africa. The Hercules Cave, Tangier is not only a very popular tourist attraction because of its legendary past but it is also of great archeological importance.
